Corberan wanted Southampton job before £2.5m+ West Brom twist

Carlos Corberan was keen on leaving West Brom for the managerial job at Southampton but the Saints were not willing to pay his release clause, according to talkSPORT.

The news outlet reported that despite being keen on the Spaniard, who was interested in a move to the Premier League, the South Coast club were not willing to meet his release clause believed to be at least £2.5million to prize him away from The Hawthorns.

The Baggies boss was a frontrunner for the vacancy [Rob Dorsett] but instead, it is former Roma boss Ivan Juric who is expected to take the reigns at St Mary’s for the remainder of the season.

Carlos Corberan will have to make it to the Premier League with West Brom

After Albion fans were seemingly unconcerned about a potential move away for their manager, it will be disappointing to read that the manager was keen on leaving his current role to have a go at the Southampton job.

However, it is not surprising to see that the 41-year-old is eyeing up a progressive move in the hope of proving his trade in the Premier League. Having been linked with a number of vacancies of late, this is surely proof that his abilities are ready to be pushed.

Nevertheless, he will be staying put at The Hawthorns and it is now up to him to prove to the Albion faithful that he can deliver by continuing the good job he has done with his side so far and guiding them to the play-offs with the hope of promotion on the cards.

The Black Country side have fallen out of the top six after a run of too many draws that weren’t converted to anything more and following a loss against Watford last weekend, Corberan needs to shift his mind to the current job in hand and make sure three points is the expectation against Bristol City on Sunday [22 December].
