Bristol City boss Manning to be surprise frontunner for West Brom manager job

Bristol City boss Liam Manning is expected to be one of the front runners to take over at West Brom, Oddschecker reports.

According to the gambling comparison website [24 December], Manning is in line to be named as one of the bookies’ favourites to succeed Carlos Corberan, who will leave for Valencia after the La Liga outfit triggered his £2.8 million release clause [Fabrizio Romano].

However, with the Baggies still in the mix for a playoff berth heading into January, a quick appointment is expected at The Hawthorns [DOOD] with Shilen Patel eager not to let Corberan’s depature derail Albion’s campaign.

West Brom could appoint Bristol City manager Liam Manning

The 39-year-old is just over a year into his tenure at Bristol City, having taken over from Nigel Pearson and guided the Robins to a comfortable 11th-place Championship finish.

He made his name in League One with MK Dons and Oxford United, winning the Manager of the Month award on three occasions and has made the jump to the second tier with ease.

However, Bristol City are lingering in midtable security heading into the midway point of the campaign and considering the Baggies made easy work of Manning in the 2-0 win at The Hawthorns on Sunday [22 December], he would hardly be the ideal choice.

West Brom supporters have already made their feelings known about who their perfect replacement for Corberan would be, and they would prefer to see former Brighton and Chelsea boss Graham Potter return to the West Midlands.

Despite Corberan developing a reputation as a draw merchant in the Championship, with half of his 22 games this season ending in a stalemate, he will depart for his boyhood club with the love of the West Brom faithful, and his replacement must meet their high demands.

In other West Brom news, an ex-Premier League boss is on the Baggies’ manager shortlist with Carlos Corberan’s exit imminent.
