Corberan 'unrest' revealed at West Brom before The Hawthorns exit

West Brom News Speaking to Don Goodman

West Brom News is delighted to have Don Goodman joining its team of Albion experts at the start of 2024. Goodman played for the Baggies between 1987 and 1991, scoring 60 goals in 140 league appearances to make him one of the most prolific strikers in Hawthorns history. Goodman also played for Bradford, Sunderland, Wolves, Motherwell and Walsall in his career and since hanging up his boots, he's been working in the media with Sky Sports. Now, Don has agreed to join West Brom News and we're absolutely thrilled to share his expertise on the Baggies every week.

Don Goodman believes most West Brom fans respect the job that Carlos Corberan did throughout his time at The Hawthorns.

Corberan's Christmas Eve exit certainly left a sore feeling in the Black Country after the Spaniard departed for Valencia.

Despite several bumps along the way, Corberan transformed the Baggies from a side that looked set for relegation into one capable of fighting for promotion and Goodman told West Brom News that he thinks the Spaniard received the appropriate respect for what he did with the club.

"I think he is respected by the majority," Goodman said. "There was a tiny minority where they went through a load of draw and games were struggling to score goals, particularly at the Hawthorns, and there was a little bit of unrest but I think most fans remember where they were when he took the reins.

"There just wasn't a good feel around West Brom at all. He changed all that. So he's certainly one of those managers he can look back and reflect. And a lot of managers do this and say, hand on heart, he's left them in a much, much better place than what he found them.

"At this moment, he's left them with a real genuine chance, they should be in the race for the playoffs between now and the end of the season."

Carlos Corberan did wonders for West Brom

To consider where the Baggies were when he joined in comparison to where he has now left them, you can't possibly argue against the splendid job that he oversaw and he has received his reward for doing so.

Unfortunately for West Brom, that means a forward step for the Spaniard but he will forever be remembered as the man who got the Baggies back on track and supporters should be grateful for that.

Of course, in football, there's little time for mourning and the search for his successor needs to be brought to a swift conclusion with Mark Robins one of the candidates linked with the job.

The Baggies still have every chance of achieving success this season and much of that is down to the strong foundations built by Corberan before his departure.
