Tony Mowbray twist emerges as West Brom eye new manager
West Brom spoke to Tony Mowbray about the vacant managerial position this week, according to Charlie Haffenden.
The Birmingham World journalist reported that he was flattered by the links but feels it came at the wrong time, given issues with his health.
The club have interviewed several alternatives as they aim to finalise Carlos Corberan’s successor.
Via X, Haffenden wrote: “Told West Brom spoke to Tony Mowbray over vacant managerial position this week. He was flattered but feels it wasn’t the right time due to his recent health concerns. West Brom have interviewed several alternatives.”
Raphael Wicky appears set to be the next West Brom manager
Given Mowbray’s health concerns, it’s entirely justifiable that he declined the managerial position at the Hawthorns, prioritising his well-being over professional commitments.
Health should always come first and Mowbray’s decision reflects a responsible and wise choice, especially considering the demanding nature of football management.
Following this, the Baggies have moved forward with their search, and it now appears that Raphael Wicky is set to take the helm. [Sky Sports, 10 January]
Wicky’s appointment seems promising given his track record, particularly his success with Young Boys where he won a Swiss double, showcasing his capability to lead a team to significant achievements.
Despite a less stellar stint with Chicago Fire, his European experience aligns well with West Brom’s aspirations for a modern, data-driven approach, which could be beneficial for the club’s future.
This transition could indeed be a good appointment for the Baggies, bringing fresh tactics and energy to the team.
Only time will tell how things materialise with regards to Wicky at the Hawthorns.
