Mowbray reveals mystery West Brom star will miss Sheffield Wednesday clash

Tony Mowbray has issued a cryptic segment of team news as West Brom host Sheffield Wednesday at The Hawthorns.

The Baggies take on the Owls on Saturday lunchtime (8 February), though will be missing a first-team player for the clash.

Albion are looking to maintain their spot inside the Championship’s top six and restore form after their disappointing defeat by Plymouth Argyle last time out.

As quoted by the Express & Star (7 February), Mowbray refused to reveal the identity of the player who has been struck down with illness ahead of the weekend.

It was however noted that it was a “frontman” – though it is more beneficial for the Baggies for this inconvenience to occur now rather than before they signed three attacking arrivals before the transfer deadline.

Adam Armstrong, Tammer Bany and Will Lankshear could all be among those to feature at The Hawthorns on Saturday in a huge new task for the Sheffield Wednesday defence.

It is the only new fitness issue from the last outing for Mowbray’s side, who look in far better shape than they had entered the January market.

West Brom may be inside the play-off spots and four places above their opponents, but they can be leapfrogged by Danny Rohl’s men with defeat, such is the tight nature of the race for the top six.

Baggies attack sparkling ahead of final 16 games

Albion enjoyed a terrific transfer window which has seen Shilen Patel and Andrew Nestor revel in the credit from supporters with their recent social media posts.

The hierarchy deserve the plaudits for how they navigated the 34-day window, a notoriously difficult market in which to operate mid-season.

The attacking additions have got Albion fans on the edge of their seats for the play-off push, though the departure of Alex Palmer was a tough one to take given what a loyal servant he had been, now wished a fond farewell in the Premier League with Ipswich.

Only six league defeats have been suffered by the West Midlanders this campaign, two of them in the last three since Mowbray arrived, but he is looking to gradually get a tune out of an improved squad towards the business end of 2024-25.
