John Swift bombshell: Collapsed deadline day West Brom transfer revealed
John Swift was the subject of a collapsed transfer in the final hours of the winter transfer window at West Brom.
The Baggies had a busy end to the window, with Tammer Bany and Adam Armstrong arriving as deadline-day signings, while Alex Palmer headed in the other direction.
It appears Palmer may not have been the only high-profile exit at The Hawthorns on deadline day as Swift was also lined up for a late transfer.
John Percy drops John Swift bombshell
Swift was one of two players Derby County attempted to sign on deadline day, according to John Percy, with the other being Levante’s Dani Gomez.
The journalist reported via The Telegraph website on Saturday (8 February) that the Rams saw a deal to sign the 29-year-old in the final hours of the window collapse.
West Brom to lose John Swift as free agent?
Swift started for Albion on the day before the deadline, playing alongside Alex Mowatt in their 2-1 loss against Plymouth Argyle.
However, the midfielder remained an unused substitute in the West Midlands outfit’s first game after the window as Tony Mowbray led them to a 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at The Hawthorns on Saturday.
In hindsight, it would have made sense for West Brom to sanction a late transfer for Swift.
The Championship club are set to lose the former Chelsea ace on a free transfer anyway as his contract runs out at the end of the season.
Selling Swift in the winter transfer window would have been West Brom’s last chance to fetch a transfer fee for him as things stand.

It remains to be seen if the situation will change between now and the end of the season and Mowbray’s side will hand the player a new contract to remain at The Hawthorns.
The reason why the transfer to Derby collapsed remains unclear as Percy did not provide further details.
However, Swift is stuck at West Brom for the time being.
Mowbray will not be too fussed about the move collapsing as he can now count on the Portsmouth-born player as he looks to lead the team to promotion.
