Mikey Johnston spotted as West Brom training update emerges after transfer saga

West Brom have had a chaotic start to the summer transfer window.

Ryan Mason has had no shortage of drama so far in his first full-time managerial position.

West Brom were involved in a lengthy pursuit of Hearts’ striker Lawrence Shankland, but the forward ultimately chose to stay put in Scotland.

David Brooks looked set to be a statement signing for West Brom, but the Welsh international’s move to the Black Country collapsed.

Then, Mikey Johnston was expected to be sold to Flamengo for a fee of around £5million, but the Irishman’s move to Brazil was cancelled after wild backlash from supporters.

Johnston spotted in West Brom training

With Johnston’s shock move to Brazil off the cards, the winger is set to focus on the Baggies as they aim for promotion in Mason’s first season in charge.

Lewis Cox has shared new photos on X from the pre-season camp in Austria (9 July), showing Johnston back in training with the rest of his Albion colleagues already.

West Brom were due to receive a tidy profit if the winger’s move to Flamengo materialised, having signed Johnston from Celtic for £3million after a successful loan spell at The Hawthorns.

The collapse of Johnston’s departure may now have thrown a fresh PSR obstacle in the way for Mason when conducting the rest of his transfer business, with a big sale elsewhere still on the cards.

West Brom should keep Johnston if possible

Despite not being able to fully replicate the magic from his loan spell, Johnston was still an effective asset for the Albion last season.

The signing of Aune Heggebo could help unlock Johnston, with the 23-year-old Norwegian striker set to lead the line for West Brom next season.

If Mason can receive a fee for a player like Daryl Dike, who has struggled with injuries in the past, then it would make sense to cash in on the American first.

The Baggies could then let the dust settle regarding their financial situation before seeing if any more sales need to be made.

For now, Johnston is sticking around.
