West Brom beat Stoke City to new transfer as Patel signs off on six-figure deal

West Brom’s preparations for next season are well underway as they continue to add their squad.

Ryan Mason will be looking to make the Baggies play-off contenders again after a torrid end to last season.

Albion have so far made good strides towards that goal, bringing in Nat Phillips from Liverpool and reinforcing their attack with the signing of Aune Heggebo from Norwegian side SK Brann.

West Brom now look set to add to their squad again as they beat off Championship competition to the signing of George Campbell.

West Brom beat Stoke to signing of Campbell

Campbell is getting closer to completing a move to The Hawthorns.

According to The Express and Star (14 July), there have been other Championship sides interested in the powerful defender, including Stoke City.

The 24-year-old plays for Canadian side CF Montreal, who compete in Major League Soccer, and Shilen Patel is expected to splash out £1million for Campbell.

He will offer much-needed versatility in the West Brom defence, having played at both centre-back and right-back regularly in his career.

Campbell has impressed in Canada and USA over the last couple of seasons

Campbell is a rare bargain in today’s transfer market, so it will be interesting to see how he performs in the Championship.

The Baggies were in need of adding fresh legs in defence, after losing the experienced Semi Ajayi at the end of last season.

The move could allow Mason to shift his focus onto adding more options in the attacking third of the field.

West Brom to focus to attack after Campbell deal

It is expected that once the Campbell deal is complete, the Baggies will turn their attention towards improving their forward line.

With the American joining Phillips and Torbjorn Heggem at the back, it’s not expected that Albion will complete much more business in terms of defenders.

Attention will instead turn to adding to their midfield and attack.

Mason will need to add to his attack whether Tom Fellows stays or not, having already lost Grady Diangana this summer.
