Mikey Johnston to be delighted as West Brom receive transfer update
Mikey Johnston has endured a fairly bizarre summer at West Brom.
The wideman notched three goals and five assists in the Championship after joining the Baggies from Celtic last summer, but it has looked like he could already be heading for the exit door in B71.
Johnston was heavily linked with a bizarre switch to Flamengo, but the Brazilian giants ultimately turned their back on the potential £5million deal as a result of the backlash that they received from frustrated fans.
Speculation surrounding the 26-year-old’s future has gone a little quiet since he was denied a dream move to Rio de Janeiro, but he will be extremely interested in a recent transfer development.

Mikey Moore’s Rangers decision suits Johnston perfectly
West Brom have been linked with a move for Tottenham gem Mikey Moore for several weeks now, as Ryan Mason prepared to raid his former employers for one of their brightest young talents on loan.
The 17-year-old broke into the first team in North London last season and has been earmarked as one of the country’s most impressive starlets after his feats in 2024/25.
He would have been a fantastic addition to West Brom’s youthful attacking contingent, alongside the likes of Tom Fellows and Isaac Price.
However, Moore has now decided that he will join Rangers on a season-long loan deal, according to Sky Sports’ Michael Bridge via X (28 July).
That will undoubtedly serve as a blow for Mason and his coaching staff, who would have been looking forward to having such a prestigious talent at their disposal.
On the other hand, it is excellent news for Johnston, who is now likely to retain his place in the Baggies’ starting XI, despite his failed departure earlier in the summer.
The Irish international is a quality player in his own right, but he would surely have lost his place to Moore in the early stages of the season at least, given the reputation that the Spurs starlet has behind him.
West Brom need more from Johnston next season
Johnston had an inconsistent season at West Brom last time out, following an incredible loan spell back in 2023/24.
He notched seven goals from just 20 appearances during his brief spell in the West Midlands, and the Baggies need him to rediscover that kind of form this term.
Season | Apps | Goals | Assists |
2024/25 | 40 | 3 | 5 |
2023/24 | 20 | 7 | 2 |
Total | 60 | 10 | 7 |
He is a player who is capable of terrorising second-tier defences on his day, and if he can turn in regularly and hit the levels that are expected of him, then Mason could have a frighteningly good trio to play behind a striker.
Fellows and Price are continuing to show huge levels of promise, and if Johnston can also get back to his best, then those three alone could produce enough to have West Brom in contention towards the top of the table.
