Who is Luca Bombino as West Brom make transfer bid for defender?

West Brom have now had a bid rejected for MLS defender Luca Bombino.

Bombino is the subject of interest from the Baggies, who are looking to strengthen their options at left-back this summer.

West Brom have had a frustrating transfer window so far, but have strengthened their back line with two new centre-backs joining, and a third defender is now being targeted.

A bid has been rejected for Bombino, but with little known about the young left-back, West Brom News has now profiled him.

Bombino’s best position

Bombino is a left-back by trade, and has featured predominantly as an attacking full-back on that side in a back four.

The teenager has appeared as a centre-back just once in his career, and his future is clearly tailored to left-back.

Bombino’s career path so far

Bombino was born in California, and came through the academy ranks at LAFC before he joined San Diego on loan in February 2025.

The 19-year-old has scored one goal and provided two assists in 19 senior matches, and while still raw, has clearly attracted interest from elsewhere.

Bombino goals

Bombino has scored just once in his senior career, with a strike against Houston Dynamo as San Diego were beaten 4-3 earlier this month.

The defender found himself in the box following a set-piece and struck home on the half-volley to make it 2-2 in the second half, before his side eventually lost.

Bombino’s assists

Bombino has registered two assists for San Diego, and both came in the last month following his goal, with one in a 2-1 victory over Chicago Fire, and his second coming in a 1-1 draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Bombino’s stats for San Diego

The teenager is a left-back who likes to get forward, and it may only be a matter of time before his creativity increases with more experience.

Bombino’s notable teammates

Bombino has played with some high-level players in his career so far, meaning that a move to the Championship may not be a total culture shock for the defender.

On his wing, former Napoli and PSV Eindhoven attacker Hirving Lozano plays ahead of Bombino, with the pair linking up on the flank.

Former West Brom defender Paddy McNair, who came through the ranks at Manchester United before a short spell at The Hawthorns, also plays alongside Bombino.
