West Brom ‘can strike another transfer blow on Middlesbrough’ with Cian Carmody deal

West Brom’s transfer business has slowed down in recent weeks.

The Baggies have frustratingly missed out on numerous transfer targets so far, with Angus Gunn being the latest player Ryan Mason has missed out on.

With Torbjorn Heggem’s West Brom future also uncertain, there is a possibility that West Brom’s team will get weaker, rather than stronger, before their opening-day clash against Blackburn on Saturday (9 August).

However, the latest rumours suggest that Albion could be the ones that get one over on their Championship rivals, as they battle Middlesbrough for the signing of Cian Carmody.

West Brom could beat Boro to Carmody’s signature

It wouldn’t be the first time West Brom dealt a transfer blow to Middlesbrough, with the Baggies securing the signing of Will Lankshear on loan from Tottenham last season amid interest from Boro.

According to Rep of Ireland Player Tracker via X (6 August), which has close to 34,000 followers, both Albion and Boro are interested in Treaty United youngster Carmody.

Carmody is capable of playing in either defence or central midfield and has impressed so far for Treaty’s under-20s side.

Whilst the Irishman would be unlikely to slot into Mason’s first-team squad immediately following his arrival, there would be a clear path to the senior squad for Carmody, who would be likely to initially link up with Richard Beale and the U21s.

If Heggem were to leave and West Brom did not replace him, Carmody could quickly find himself in and around Mason’s squad if he continues to grow and develop.

More arrivals still needed for West Brom this summer

If Albion want to have a successful campaign under Mason in the Championship, more reinforcements must be brought in who are ready to contribute in the here and now.

This urgency to recruit will be forced to increase if Heggem is eventually sold, with the Norwegian defender having an exceptional campaign in the Black Country last time out.

Goalkeeper is still a position that needs to be addressed, whilst another body in midfield to give Mason more options to potentially play alongside Alex Mowatt would also be handy.

Mason will also be hoping he can keep his star man Tom Fellows, who has attracted interest from Southampton, as losing Heggem and Fellows this close to the new campaign would be a catastrophic blow for West Brom.
