Darnell Furlong continues ridiculous West Brom tradition started by Jake Livermore
Darnell Furlong did not have a match to remember in West Brom’s 1-0 victory against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
The captain was given his marching orders in added time after picking up a second yellow card.
As a result, Furlong is now set to miss the clash against Derby County in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
Ryan Mason will no doubt be annoyed that his captain is suspended for the tie.

Jake Livermore was also sent off in Sam Allardyce’s first West Brom match
Furlong’s red card isn’t the first time that a new West Brom manager has seen their captain sent off in their first game.
The Baggies’ new managers rarely get much luck for their opening match in charge, and this was also true for Sam Allardyce.
Coming into a side fighting relegation in the 2020/21 campaign, the former England manager was hoping to get off to a good start.
- Allardyce came into a West Brom side fighting to stay in the Premier League
- However, the former England international took the Baggies down without a fight
- Allardyce only won 4 matches at West Brom
At The Hawthorns, the Baggies welcomed rivals Aston Villa. However, it wasn’t a match to remember, with captain Jake Livermore being sent off for a studs-up lunge on Jack Grealish before half-time with the hosts already 1-0 down.
Villa would go on to win the match 3-0 in a dreadful start for Allardyce.
Therefore, Furlong has now allowed this ridiculous tradition of West Brom’s captain being sent off in their new manager’s first game to continue after his red card against Blackburn.
Furlong needs to take more responsibility as captain
While the red card may have been harsh, it was reckless from Furlong to make the challenge, considering he was on a booking.
As captain, Furlong has to be a role model for the rest of the squad, and mistakes such as that are simply not good enough.
West Brom are fortunate that it didn’t come back to haunt them as they managed to see out the win.
However, Furlong simply cannot do something so idiotic again, or it could cost the Baggies a result.
