West Brom could inflict more damage on Wrexham before the end of August.

Ryan Mason already has one over the Hollywood club with his West Brom side securing a 3-2 victory over Wrexham on Saturday.

Isaac Price scored twice for Albion, while Jed Wallace was also able to get in on the action.

However, one notable absentee was Torbjorn Heggem, who has since completed a transfer to Serie A outfit Bologna.

West Brom need to replace Heggem, and they could cause more hurt to Wrexham by landing one of their top targets.

Chris Mepham would be a great addition for West Brom

Chris Mepham was stalwart in the Sunderland defence last season, having spent the season on loan in the North East from Bournemouth

However, his return to the Cherries is going to bring very limited game time, and he could be on the move again this summer.

Wrexham have been linked with a move for the Welsh International, but this is a deal that makes so much sense for the Baggies to hijack.

Albion's centre-back options

  • George Campbell
  • Nat Phillips
  • Caleb Taylor
  • Krystian Bielik

Mepham would bring a wealth of experience to The Hawthorns and subdue any concerns over the exit of Heggem.

The Welshman made 40 appearances for Sunderland in the Championship last season and aided them in their promotion back to the Premier League.

What did Carlton Palmer say about Mepham?

Mepham received plenty of praise throughout his time at Sunderland, with Carlton Palmer one of several pundits who were impressed by his performances.

Via Football League World, he said: “The hierarchy at Sunderland have backed [Regis Le Bris], one of the players who has done outstanding for them is Chris Mepham.

"Mepham has seamlessly stepped into Sunderland’s starting lineup and has been outstanding."

Questions would emerge over his ability to slip straight into the West Brom team given his lack of pre-season minutes, but on this evidence, it would be a great addition for Albion.

Mepham has a bit of everything in his game, and the same was said about Heggem before his transfer to Italy.
