What John Mousinho said after two crushing Portsmouth defeats vs West Brom
West Brom and Portsmouth met for the first time in years last season in an eventful Championship campaign for both sides.
West Brom were dominant against the Blues on the pitch, winning 3-0 away and 5-1 at The Hawthorns.
Things weren’t quite so smooth sailing for the Baggies off the pitch, with Carlos Corberan’s departure leaving West Brom fighting to climb the table.
Tony Mowbray ultimately replaced the Spaniard but was sacked in April, and Portsmouth boss John Mousinho himself also worried about his job following the heavy defeats to The Albion.

Portsmouth manager Mousinho thought he’d ‘run out of credit’ following 5-1 loss to West Brom
West Brom reportedly showed interest in Mousinho in January and over the summer in the search to fill their managerial vacancy.
Despite speculation linking him to other roles, he insisted he had never had any contact from other clubs.
“It’s a funny one. I was sat around the pool having a little chuckle. There was no contact from myself, nothing from the football club, nothing from any agents,” he told Portsmouth-based outlet The News.
- Alex Mowatt and Jed Wallace both scored in the 5-1 win
- The Baggies also added goals through John Swift and a double from Grady Diangana
Following a disappointing string of results for Pompey in January and the heavy loss to the Baggies, it seems reasonable for him to show his loyalty to a side that backed him through a tough period.
Mousinho admitted that the defeat was a real low point for him last season.
“At West Brom, I thought I’d run out of credit. We were rubbish on the day. But when they started singing my name afterwards, I thought, you know what, we’ve got half a chance here,” he said.

What can West Brom expect from Portsmouth?
The visitors clearly showed they have plenty of resolute following the thrashing last season, as they managed to stay up comfortably.
Pompey won their opening game of the Championship season 1-0 against Oxford, but didn’t look comfortable in their 2-1 loss to Norwich.
Given Portsmouth’s lack of attacking threat against the Canaries, Ryan Mason can take advantage.
West Brom have won their opening two games of the season and look set to continue their impressive run against Portsmouth.
It’s expected that the Baggies will have too much for the visitors and could give Mousinho another thrashing.
