West Brom player ratings vs Portsmouth – Mikey Johnston outstanding, teammate drops 4/10 howler
West Brom were held to a 1-1 draw by Portsmouth at The Hawthorns on a day when too many players underperformed.
Ryan Mason’s side had won their previous two Championship fixtures going into the game on Saturday.
Mikey Johnston scored what is sure to be a Goal of the Season contender to open the scoring after being given a place in the starting XI following the impact he made off the bench against Wrexham.
Colby Bishop drew the visitors level with a superb header, but the drama was far from over there.
Mason was sent off after two appalling refereeing decisions saw West Brom denied a stonewall penalty before Aune Heggebo was fouled, and Regan Poole should’ve been sent off.
Now, West Brom News bring you the player ratings from a dramatic afternoon at The Hawthorns.

Mikey Johnston scores screamer
Following his performance against Portsmouth, Johnston will likely be one of the first names on the teamsheet to face Stoke City next time out.
The winger was at his mesmerising best, and his effort from distance gave Albion a deserved lead.
Johnston stats against Portsmouth:
- One goal
- 23 accurate passes (96% total accuracy)
- 33 touches
- One key pass
With two assists and one goal in his last two appearances, Johnston looks to be rekindling the form he initially displayed upon his arrival in the Black Country.
Perhaps West Brom won’t need to sign a player like Ben Brereton-Diaz if Johnston continues to keep putting in these types of performances.
Callum Styles has an afternoon to forget
Styles had a poor performance against Portsmouth, and although it shouldn’t have mattered if the Baggies were rightfully awarded a penalty, the full-back’s performance was still concerning.
The 25-year-old only managed to win one of his five aerial duels whilst also offering little in an attacking sense.
Styles did not complete a single accurate cross the entire game, whilst also being dribbled past twice.
