Chris Mepham transfer agreed: Likely shirt number and wages as West Brom medical next
Chris Mepham is set to sign for West Brom as Ryan Mason accelerates his transfer plans.
West Brom have sold Torbjorn Heggem to Bologna, which prompted worries over the Baggies’ lack of depth in defence, but Mepham should alleviate those.
He looks set to join former Bournemouth teammate Nat Phillips in the heart of West Brom’s defence, with Mason looking to mount a charge for promotion this season.
With the Wales international having agreed a move to the Black Country, the defender now needs to undergo formalities before officially signing.

Chris Mepham can become West Brom’s second-highest earner
West Brom faced competition from Rangers for Mepham, but they have won the race.
The defender had a brilliant 2024/25 campaign on loan with Sunderland as he helped them win promotion to the Premier League.
It was the second time he has sealed promotion to the top-flight, and Mason will be hoping he can do the same for the Baggies.
Club | Appearances | Goals | Clean sheets |

Before Mepham steps foot on the pitch, he must sign off on personal terms with West Brom, and he will likely be on reduced wages.
At Bournemouth, he currently earns £37,000-a-week. In comparison, the Baggies’ top earner, Daryl Dike, earns £32,000.
Heggem, who was sold for over £5million, was on just £8,000-a-week, so The Albion will likely have to increase their wage bill for this move.
Given that, he could still become one of West Brom’s highest earners, with a deal likely in the region of £30,000-a-week on the table.
The news of Mepham signing could mean that a move for Leicester City’s Ben Nelson is unlikely, with a medical next for the Welsh international.

What shirt number will Chris Mepham wear?
Shirt numbers two to 11 are currently occupied, after new signing Krystian Bielik took the vacant number five shirt.
Given that Heggem wore the number 14 in his first season at The Hawthorns, it is likely that Mepham will wear the same.
Shirt numbers 13 and 18 are also vacant, should he choose to wear either number.
The 27-year-old wore number 26 while on loan with Sunderland, but Tammer Bany currently wears the number.
