How Torbjorn Heggem is getting on since West Brom exit – Clean sheets and record-breaking win

Torbjorn Heggem has had an eye-catching few weeks since he left West Brom at the start of August.

The Norwegian failed to start just once for the Baggies across the entire Championship season last time out, and they were able to secure a significant profit on their initial investment in him.

West Brom netted around £10million by selling Heggem to Bologna, despite laying out a fee of £525,000 to bring him in just one year before.

Ryan Mason’s side have made a strong start to the season without the defender, and his fortunes have been similarly positive.

Torbjorn Heggem has started the last three Serie A games

Heggem’s exit certainly raised eyebrows at West Brom, given that he was such a key player for them last time out.

The 26-year-old quickly became an integral part of the group in B71, and it was ultimately no surprise to see him move on to bigger and better things.

The defender found it difficult to break into the side in the early stages of his time in Italy, but he has now established himself as a regular in the starting XI for Bologna.

Heggem has started in each of his side’s last three Serie A games, although he was an unused substitute in the Europa League defeat at Aston Villa on Thursday night.

That run began with a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Como on 30 August, and was followed up by a 1-0 defeat to AC Milan after the international break.

Bologna scored in stoppage time to defeat Genoa 2-1 in his last outing, and Heggem missed just five minutes of football across those three encounters.

He was also part of a notable moment on the international stage at the start of September, as he played every minute of Norway’s 11-1 win over Moldova in World Cup qualifying.

That victory broke the previous record for his country’s biggest win during competitive action.

West Brom are coping well without Torbjorn Heggem

West Brom are coping well without Heggem so far, as Mason appears to have already unearthed an excellent partnership at the heart of the backline.

Both Chris Mepham and Nat Phillips have been superb in the early stages of the season, and both look to be inspired signings, having arrived for a combined fee of just over £4m.

Heggem’s influence at The Hawthorns last season shouldn’t be underestimated, but to replace him with two brilliant options and still net a profit of around £6m surely has to go down as phenomenal business from Albion.

There were rightly concerns among fans as to how the Norwegian would be replaced once his sale was confirmed, but it’s fair to say that those worries are already a thing of the past.
