West Brom must drop Aune Heggebo as humiliating stat emerges from Millwall demolition

West Brom’s awful 3-0 defeat against Millwall raised plenty of alarm bells on Saturday.

The Baggies were completely undone by the Lions, with the visitors not being able to lay a glove on them.

Many West Brom players were simply terrible at The Den, as their hopes of promotion this season suffered a serious setback.

Aune Heggebo was arguably the worst of all, and now Ryan Mason needs to question the striker’s future in the starting XI.

Aune Heggebo only managed 33 touches in Millwall vs West Brom

Heggebo has had an indifferent start at West Brom since he signed in the summer.

The striker has put in multiple good performances for the Baggies. However, he still only has one Championship goal to show for all his work.

As a result, Heggebo’s place in West Brom’s starting XI has been questioned multiple times, and now, Mason has to consider dropping the attacker after the international break.

According to Fotmob on 5 October, the striker only had 33 touches against Millwall, the lowest of any outfield star who played the full match.

Heggebo was terrible against Millwall

On top of this, when Heggebo did have the ball, he achieved little. Throughout, he failed to have an effort on target, only completed 65 per cent of his passes and was incredibly poor at winning duels.

While the striker wasn’t the only player on the pitch who put in a bad display, it is no doubt becoming a massive concern that their star striker simply cannot be effective in attack.

In comparison, when Josh Maja was awarded his first start against Norwich in months on Wednesday, he found the net, showing the gulf in quality between the two Baggies stars.

Therefore, after the international break, Maja simply has to come into the team for Heggebo or Mason could find the Baggies slipping further down the Championship table.

Ryan Mason makes honest assessment of West Brom’s performance vs Millwall

Mason is rightly far from pleased with how the match panned out at The Den.

Going into the international break, the Baggies could have been one point off the top two, but are now out of the playoffs.

As a result, Mason spoke to BBC WM on 4 October, labelling the performance as the “worst of the season”.

“Every aspect of the game we were probably outdone, which is tough to take,” Mason said.

“We didn’t assert ourselves or show enough quality and personality.

“I need to work that and get more out of the lads. We didn’t deserve anything today, it is the worst performance of the season. It is difficult when you’ve got two weeks to sit on it, but it is also two weeks to work and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
