Mikey Johnston returns, huge decision made on Callum Styles – West Brom predicted XI vs Oxford United

Ryan Mason is surely set to recall Mikey Johnston to the West Brom starting XI this weekend.

The Baggies face Oxford United on Saturday afternoon, as they look to end a woeful recent run of four games without a win that has seen them slide down the Championship table.

Johnston was controversially left out for West Brom in their midweek defeat to Charlton, and they desperately missed the winger’s energetic presence from the off as they were ultimately beaten in stoppage time at The Valley.

The former Celtic star has been a hugely influential figure at The Hawthorns so far this season, and he is set to be recalled to the starting lineup for this weekend’s clash.

Callum Styles to start in midfield vs Oxford United

Johnston has been a star performer for West Brom so far this season, as Mason’s decision to start him from the bench on Tuesday night was simply baffling.

No Albion player has notched more goal contributions than the Irishman so far in 2025-26, while his tallies for big chances created and successful dribbles are also unmatched.

Mason’s men missed his ability to drive up the pitch against Charlton, and given their creative struggles of late, it is inconceivable that Johnston doesn’t come back in from the start against Oxford.

Injury concerns are beginning to mount for the Baggies, which limits the boss’ options across the rest of the team.

With that in mind, he may be about to make a big call on Callum Styles and push the Hungary international into his natural midfield role, where he is rarely seen in B71 these days.

The 25-year-old has excelled for his country in a central position recently, and Mason will be hoping that he can turn in a similarly impressive level of performance.

Charlie Taylor is the likely man to cover for Styles at left-back, with Mason likely to return to his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation, after the failed switch to a back three in midweek.

West Brom haven’t lost to Oxford United since 1998

West Brom are favourites to beat Oxford this weekend, with their upcoming visitors currently hovering precariously above the Championship drop zone.

Gary Rowett’s side were beaten 3-0 at home by Stoke City in midweek, and Albion have reason to be optimistic despite their own recent poor run.

The B71 outfit haven’t lost to the U’s since 1998, and have won three and drawn one of their four competitive meetings since that defeat.

Mason will be desperate to see that run continue on Saturday, not least because three points would go a long way towards easing some of the pressure that is currently mounting on him.
