Horrifying Championship stat exposes just how bad Ryan Mason’s tactics are at West Brom

West Brom fell to another defeat on Saturday as an awful second-half performance cost Ryan Mason’s side against Coventry.

The Baggies were cruising in the first half, going into the break 2-1 up.

However, West Brom collapsed in the second period and would end up losing 3-2 to Coventry.

While Jayson Molumby’s red card did not help matters for West Brom, questions continue to be asked about Mason’s tactics, as pressure heats up on the Baggies manager.

West Brom continue to collapse in the second half

Some of Mason’s decisions against Coventry were odd.

West Brom took over Mikey Johnston at half-time, a decision that angered many fans, with the winger proving to be their most creative player.

Yet, these strange decisions are not uncommon, with Mason proving incapable of seeing a result out.

According to Soccer Stats on 23 November, the Baggies are excellent at starting games, and are third in the Championship table for first-half performances.

Here, they have won seven of their 16 matches in the first period, only losing two.

Yet, in the second half, things collapse, with West Brom having the third-worst performance in the division.

Here, they have only won two of their games in the second period, scoring just six times.

This no doubt exposes how bad Mason’s tactics are in the second period, with the manager incapable of adapting to see out a result.

This is heavily concerning, and if this trend continues, West Brom could find themselves in a relegation battle soon enough.

Who do West Brom face next?

Next up, West Brom will welcome Birmingham City to The Hawthorns.

It will be the Baggies’ first derby game of the 2025-26 campaign, with Mason in desperate need of victory.

However, the Blues are in fine form, winning three of their last four matches, and are now just a point off the playoffs.

The game is set to take place on Wednesday, 26 November at 8pm.
