Roy Hodgson apologises to Mick McCarthy for what he did to him as West Brom manager

Ex-West Brom manager Roy Hodgson has jokingly told Mick McCarthy that he is sorry for getting the former Wolves manager sacked.

The 78-year-old took over at The Hawthorns in 2011, signing a contract until the end of the season after Roberto Di Matteo had been dismissed.

West Brom would finish 11th in the Premier League at the end of the season, and would follow that up with a 10th-placed finish before leaving to take over as manager of England.

Hodgson later admitted he would have stayed at West Brom in 2012, had it not been England who had made the call.

West Brom were linked with Hodgson again in 2021, but the Englishman would take over at Watford instead.

McCarthy spent six years with Wolves, leading them up to the Premier League in 2010 and keeping them there until he was sacked.

The 2011-12 season had started brilliantly for the former defender’s team, who sat at the top of the Premier League after three games.

But by January, Wolves were in the relegation zone after going nine games without victory.

An away win over Queens Park Rangers looked to have got McCarthy’s team back on track, but the Black Country derby against Hodgson’s West Brom would see it all come tumbling down once more.

The Baggies smashed Wolves 5-1 at Molineux, with Peter Odemwingie scoring a hat-trick.

McCarthy would be shown the door the very next day. Speaking on The Managers podcast, Hodgson jokingly apologised for the result.

“You beat me at Wolves, and I got the sack the day after, so thanks for that,” the former Ireland international said, to which Hodgson laughed and said, “Yeah, sorry about that.

Hodgson ‘enjoyed it very much’ at The Hawthorns

Hodgson was followed by Steve Clarke, who led West Brom to their best Premier League finish since 1981 – eighth.

The following seasons would see all consistency thrown out of the window, however, with a brief resurgence under Tony Pulis, followed by relegation in 2018.

Speaking about his time at The Hawthorns, Hodgson said: “Very good, very good, enjoyed it very much. Again, lucky, good players, good people and I really enjoyed that.

“I would have stayed on, funnily enough, after the two years.”
