Why Mikey Johnston’s staggering numbers have him among the Championship’s elite

Mikey Johnston has emerged as one of the Championship’s best players over the last 12 months.

Johnston has become West Brom’s star man alongside Aune Heggebo, with the pair developing a fantastic relationship in attack.

The Republic of Ireland international has bailed the Baggies out of several tough matches since his arrival in August 2024.

When on the ball, Johnston is always looking to get at opposition players, and is proving to be a nightmare for full-backs to defend.

With West Brom six points off the play-off places, Johnston has the quality to drag them back up the table and alleviate some of the pressure off Ryan Mason.

Mikey Johnston second for assists in the Championship

Johnston’s recent performance against Coventry was hailed, and despite not flourishing on the international stage, the winger is hitting new levels at The Hawthorns.

That match is just one example of the winger’s devastating form, and if the Baggies fail to secure promotion under Mason, then he might get snapped up by a Premier League club soon.

The 26-year-old has only scored twice, and although that has to improve if he wants to reach even bigger heights, his underlying stats are fantastic.

Only Ryan Giles has more assists (eight), while no player has made more successful crosses in the second tier (32).

With 40 successful dribbles and 73 recoveries, he has developed the perfect balance of being effective at both ends of the pitch.

West Brom’s underperformance in the Championship could be a lot worse if it weren’t for Johnston‘s heroics in attack, linking up well with Isaac Price to bail the Baggies out of trouble frequently.

He could also save Mason from the sack in the coming weeks.

Another year in the Championship looks likely for West Brom, and Mason will have wasted a great opportunity to secure Premier League football for the Baggies.

Ryan Mason would have been sacked already if it wasn’t Mikey Johnston

This season has been incredibly open, with all three relegated clubs looking shaky throughout at various points in the campaign, leaving several teams with a chance of promotion.

Mason is under increasing scrutiny, and there is a huge sense of disappointment over the team’s inconsistency.

Johnston has done his best to provide match-winning contributions here and there, but it’s clear that the team’s mentality is very weak.

Seven consecutive away defeats have left them with a huge mountain to climb, and Johnston’s performances across the festive period will be crucial to determining whether or not they can pull off an unlikely surge up the Championship table.
