West Brom hold New Year’s Day record only one English club can match

West Brom have suffered the most defeats on New Year’s Day in the Football League ahead of their trip to Swansea City on Thursday.

Ryan Mason’s team will travel to the Swansea.com Stadium on 1 January, with the English manager looking for back-to-back wins.

QPR suffered defeat at The Hawthorns on 29 December, and the Baggies will hope their historic record doesn’t go against them in Wales.

The Albion have ended the year seven points behind the play-offs spot, and Bilkul Football will surely be expecting a massive turnaround in the second half of the season.

Preston North End only team to match West Brom record

Both West Brom and Preston North End have suffered 29 defeats on New Year’s Day.

The Baggies did manage to win at the start of 2025, beating PNE 3-1 at The Hawthorns on 1 January last season.

It remains to be seen whether the Baggies can continue to beat teams at the turn of the year, with a loss surely further damaging their hopes of getting back into the Premier League.

Nat Phillips has been in decent form under Mason, and the former Tottenham assistant head coach will undoubtedly want the team to put in better performances for the rest of the campaign.

There’s still a long way to go in the Championship, and the Albion have every chance of clawing their way closer to sixth-place Watford.

West Brom looking for seven-year first vs Swansea

West Brom beat Swansea 3-2 in the reverse fixture on 29 November, and have an opportunity to do a league double on them.

The last time the Baggies managed that feat was in the 2018-19 season under Darren Moore and James Shan.

However, it won’t be easy, as the Swans have lost just one of their last 10 home league games against the Albion, with seven wins and two draws.

West Brom haven’t managed a win at the Swansea.com Stadium in their last five trips to Wales, and Mason has a challenging task facing him next.
