West Brom fans in disbelief at Ryan Mason footage as Hawthorns sack looms

Ryan Mason is living on borrowed time following West Brom’s defeat to Swansea on Thursday.

The pressure continues to build on Mason at The Hawthorns as West Brom’s 1-0 loss to Swansea leaves them 18th in the Championship table.

The Baggies lacked cutting edge in the match before ultimately being punished by Jay Fulton’s long-range strike in the 74th minute.

Mason has lost nine away games in a row, and there seems to be no way back for the former Tottenham man at The Hawthorns.

West Brom fans slam Ryan Mason for his excuses after the match

The Baggies have failed to gain any sort of momentum in the second tier since August, and their form on the road has prevented them from achieving anything of note under Mason.

After the match, he told the club’s website: “Not being able to make changes to our squad probably affected us a little bit in terms of our intensity.

“We’ve been punished for not taking our chances when they came, and they score their goal from 30 yards.

“There are many different reasons that have contributed to the loss, and the game was in our control, but we weren’t able to make changes.

“We actually can’t make subs due to illness and injuries, and you could see our intensity was very low in the first half.”

Fans online voiced their displeasure in numbers on social media following Mason‘s comments after the match.

One fan added: “He refuses to use youth because he’s scared of trying something different.”

Another fan said: “What on earth does this do to the mentality of the youngsters that you’re coming out and saying we would rather waste a place on the bench than reward you for playing well at U21 level! And how does it explain all the other games he won’t make subs!”

Mason’s relationship with the fans has been severed beyond repair, and Andrew Nestor and Co. have no choice but to act if they want to avoid further uproar.

Ryan Mason’s excuses simply don’t cut it after Swansea defeat

For a manager to publicly come out and say his players on the bench were injured or unwell is scandalous, and fans are right to call it out.

There are plenty of academy players who could have been named as substitutes instead, who would have brought something different to the match.

More importantly, they would have been fully fit, and the loss to Swansea side that leapfrogged the Baggies in the table seems like a huge wasted opportunity.

West Brom travel to Leicester on Monday, and if some players are still not at 100 per cent, then he simply can’t continue to select them.

Otherwise, the chances of another loss will increase, and the club will have no choice but to bring his disastrous reign to an end.
