West Brom could still sign Liverpool gem as Arne Slot plan foiled

West Brom thought they had been ruled out of a move for Liverpool’s James McConnell, but that may not be the case.

West Brom have been linked with McConnell, who looks set to be recalled early from his loan at Ajax, due to a lack of gametime.

Arne Slot was reportedly considering playing the Baggies target in the FA Cup clash with Barnsley, which would have meant a move to The Hawthorns would be off the cards due to FIFA rules.

The governing body only allows a player to play for two clubs in one season, but the latest update may provide encouragement for the B71 outfit.

James McConnell latest could give West Brom hope

Ryan Mason is desperate to add a midfielder to West Brom’s ranks, as he tries to climb the Championship table, and the Reds gem would fit the bill.

He looks set to miss out on the clash with the Tykes, which could open the door to a move to the Throstles, and foil Slot’s plans to use him.

A report from This is Anfield on 3 December claimed that McConnell is carrying an injury, and is “almost certain” to miss the contest.

What would McConnell bring to the Baggies?

McConnell has experience in the Reds’ first-team, playing 13 matches for the senior side on Merseyside, so he has played at the highest level.

He is primarily a holding midfielder, but can also play as an eight, which would provide Mason with a versatile option.

The youngster could add more press resistance to the engine room in the Black Country, as he has brilliant ball retention skills.

He also has an eye for a pass, which could help Mason’s side create more going forward, which has been a huge issue this season.

Former Anfield boss Jurgen Klopp rated the 21-year-old very highly, and given his eye for talent in his stints with Borussia Dortmund and the Reds, that is surely a sign that Albion should make a move.

He would face a battle for a starting spot, with Alex Mowatt and Jayson Molumby, but he will likely fancy his chances of thriving in the second-tier.
