Sky Sports journalist apologises to West Brom fans on deadline day after old mistake

West Brom had a busier transfer deadline day than supporters expected.

Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba joined the Baggies on loan from Aston Villa, making his return to B71 after coming through the academy.

As a result, Samuel Iling-Junior was recalled by Villa after a disappointing spell at The Hawthorns.

The winger has since joined Italian side Pisa for the remainder of the campaign, and fans were certainly pleased to see him leave.

Hindolo Mustapha also joined from Crystal Palace on loan, adding to the arrivals of Jimoh-Aloba, Max O’Leary and Danny Imray.

While business did pick up, it certainly wasn’t as eventful as previous transfer windows for the Baggies, including one relived by Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett on Monday.

Rob Dorsett shares infamous story about Romelu Lukaku and West Brom

Jimoh-Aloba is an exciting signing for West Brom, and he’ll be desperate to prove his worth after coming through the academy.

He left in 2023 and has shown Unai Emery that he is ready to play in the Championship after impressing in B6.

While this deal went relatively smoothly, it’s safe to say that the Baggies haven’t had that luxury in the past.

Dorsett spoke on deadline day about one of his worst moments as a journalist, which involved West Brom and former striker Lukaku.

He said: “Whenever I go back to The Hawthorns, West Brom fans remind me about it all the time.

“In 2012, he joined West Brom from Chelsea on loan and took the Premier League by storm.

Lukaku’s record at West Brom during the 2012-13 season

“The next summer, I reported that he was going back to West Brom, but I was horribly wrong. Lukaku replied to the news by saying he wasn’t even in the country.

“So now, when I return to The Hawthorns, fans still come up to me and say, ‘Lukaku’s coming back, isn’t he?’

“That’s probably my worst deadline day moment.”

He then went on to apologise to the Baggies fans on X, jokingly apologising to Albion fans and admitting he still couldn’t believe he made such a mistake.

Luckily for the Baggies, there wasn’t much drama of the same nature this time around, and they need all three of their new players to hit the ground running.

What will each of the new signings bring to West Brom?

O’Leary has already featured twice for the Baggies and made a costly mistake by dropping a cross in the 1-1 draw to Derby.

The goalkeeper needs to improve his ability at claiming crosses, but he has proven himself to be an effective shot-stopper at Bristol City in the past.

Imray made his debut in the 3-0 loss against Portsmouth, and it’s safe to say that his introduction to the team didn’t do much to nullify their attacking threat.

However, he excelled while on loan at Blackpool in the first half of the season at right wing-back.

Jimoh-Aloba can play in midfield and on the left wing, and he could become a much better signing than Iling-Junior.

And while not a lot is known about Hindolo Mustapha, he provides Eric Ramsay with an extra option – something that is very much needed right now.

The Baggies need all of them to step up in order to prevent the club from dropping down into League One at the end of the season.
