West Brom show yet more negligence as insight shared on Dominic Price role at The Hawthorns

Shilen Patel has added a new face to the West Brom hierarchy with the appointment of Dominic Price as technical director.

West Brom are known to have been looking for a new technical director for some time now, and have finally found their man in Price.

Patel has started to come under growing scrutiny from the Albion supporters recently, as question marks arise over his so far poor track record of managerial appointments at The Hawthorns.

Tony Mowbray, Ryan Mason and now Eric Ramsay have all struggled in B71, and with the latter now eight games without a win as Albion head coach, the Baggies’ Championship status is in real danger this season.

Why Dominic Price’s West Brom move has red flags

At 35, Price is still in the relative early stages of his career at boardroom level in football.

He took his first steps with Liverpool in the early 2010s, starting off working as a coach in the Reds’ academy system.

From there he moved to Blackpool in the summer of 2020 to become a performance analyst for their first-team, which he performed for two years before returning to Liverpool in a similar role.

Price has only been a technical director at one other club so far, Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he’s been since the summer of 2023, playing his part in helping the Israeli side win back-to-back league titles.

As detailed in an X post from the Training Ground Guru, Price will oversee the academy, player pathways, loans, performance and medical as well as analysis at West Brom, which is an extensive list of responsibilities.

Not only is that putting a lot on a relatively inexperienced technical director’s plate, but the figure he was supposed to report to, Andrew Nestor, has now left The Hawthorns.

Patel is sticking to his guns by appointing younger staff

Patel has proven that he’s keen to bring young, up and coming staff to West Brom both in the dugout and at boardroom level.

Both Ramsay and Mason were head coaches with very little managerial experience to their names when handed the Albion gig, and in the case of the latter, the Baggies was/still is his first full-time head coaching role.

Given the lack of results from these two this season, Patel has been questioned over his decision-making ability, as well as his policy of largely appointing inexperienced candidates in the hope of striking gold.

And so, with the club’s financial health in an alarming place currently with supporters asking serious questions over what they’re seeing on and off the pitch, Price is another significant Patel gamble that he must get right.
