West Brom: Tony Pulis playing part in relegation fight as James Morrison opens up on talks

James Morrison has revealed he has spoken to both Tony Pulis and Tony Mowbray as he attempts to keep West Brom in the Championship.

The former midfielder continues to operate as interim boss at The Hawthorns and finally got his first win last time around.

A 3-0 win at home to Hull City has helped raise hopes that the Baggies can avoid relegation after a dreadful campaign.

There is certainly pressure on the temporary head coach, but he seems to be working with that to get the best out of his squad.

Morrison is now looking ahead to West Brom’s next clash with Bristol City and looks to be getting advice from Pulis to push Albion forward.

The B71 outfit have had their fair share of struggles in recent years, with the promotion season under Slaven Bilic the only true rest bite.

Now fighting to avoid relegation to League One, it is hard to believe that just 10 years ago, Premier League survival was achieved with ease.

The Baggies had Pulis to thank for that, as he got the most out of a squad which lacked true star quality but made up for that with hard work and grit.

His football was never easy on the eye and that eventually cost him his job, but it was certainly effective in keeping Albion where they wanted to be.

It doesn’t seem that Morrison has forgotten that and has now turned to his former boss for inspiration during his tenure as interim head coach.

As revealed by The Express and Star, he said: “I’ve made some calls. I spoke to Tony – that’s Pulis and Mowbray.”

Morrison added how he “could not get Pulis off the phone” and that he was grateful to be given some advice from both men.

West Brom can still learn from Pulis

The Welshman may not be the most popular manager ever at The Hawthorns, but no one can doubt his achievements in the West Midlands.

His pragmatic approach was seen as old fashion even back in 2015, but was effective for a side that went on to be relegated just two seasons later.

That could be exactly why West Brom need in the final eight games of the Championship season as results are king right now.

Points on the board is all anyone will remember once the campaign ends, so playing nice football shouldn’t even be a consideration.

Morrison picking Pulis’ brain can only be seen as a plus for that very reason ahead of a massive string of games in the second tier.
