George Campbell contract situation examined after recent West Brom heroics

George Campbell has been the hero for West Bromwich Albion in recent weeks.

The American defender has stepped up under James Morrison, with formidable performances at the back on a regular basis.

However, it is his exploits in front of goal which have helped the most, as he notched the winner against Bristol City and a crucial equaliser against Sheffield United in March.

The points earned by those goals look even more vital now, with the Baggies facing the potential of a points deduction from the EFL.

If West Brom lose any points, and are ultimately relegated, they may lose some players, so where does Campbell’s contract stand?

What is Campbell’s contract situation at West Brom?

Campbell signed for West Brom in the summer, and he agreed to a four-year deal when he joined The Hawthorns club.

That means his deal is not set to expire until the summer of 2029, giving Albion a lot of leeway when it comes to his future.

Interested parties may well come out of the woodwork after his performances in the Black Country, but his position is pretty secure.

How has Campbell performed this season?

Campbell has been very impressive, not just with his antics in front of goal, in his 35 Championship appearances this season.

He averages 1.7 tackles per game, 3.5 ball recoveries per game and 4.5 clearances per game, per Sofascore, which are very solid defensive numbers.

Campbell’s league stats this season.

He wins 59 per cent of his duels on the ground, and 53 per cent in the air, which are not bad figures at all in his first season in English football.

Will Campbell be sold in the summer?

Campbell could prove to be one of the most sellable assets in the event that Shilen Patel and Co need to balance the books.

However, given the fact that the breach over loss limits is small, they may not have to sell, and their strong position in terms of his deal, make it an unlikely exit.

The 24-year-old may decide to depart if the Baggies are relegated to League One, but that is a bridge that will be crossed should the time come.

Albion will be able to demand a sizeable fee, because they have him locked down to a long-term contract, so either way, they will benefit.
