West Brom points deduction confirmed: What it means for Championship relegation battle
West Bromwich Albion have received a two-point deduction following a decision made by the EFL’s Club Financial Review Panel (CFRP).
West Brom have been alleged to have broken the EFL’s profit and sustainability rules, which the Club have continuously denied.
However, in an official club statement posted to West Brom’s club website on Friday evening, it’s been confirmed that the panel have concluded that Albion have exceeded the Upper Loss Threshold over the three-year period up to 30 June 2025.
As such, the Baggies will now be docked two points, effective immediately, but as West Brom’s statement goes on to say, the CFRP have not provided a reason as to how and why they reached this decision.
So, with just two games to play, how does this news impact the wider Championship relegation battle?

Can West Brom still be relegated after two-point deduction?
With West Brom sitting on 52 points prior to Friday’s deduction revelation, Albion had mathematically secured Championship survival after their 3-0 win over Watford on Tuesday night.
However, nobody inside The Hawthorns was popping champagne at that stage, as the threat of a points deduction still lingered over the football club.
| Updated Championship bottom 5 | Points | GD |
| 20th – West Brom | 50 | -9 |
| 21st – Charlton Athletic | 50 | -13 |
| 22nd – Oxford United | 44 | -15 |
| 23rd – Leicester City | 42 | -11 |
| 24th – Sheffield Wednesday | -3 | -58 |
So, with it now being confirmed that Albion will receive an immediate two-point deduction, where does that leave them in terms of safety?
Well, West Brom could now still be relegated to League One, but it would take an awful lot to go against them for that to happen.
Firstly, James Morrison’s side would have to lose their remaining two games against Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday, which looks unlikely given the Baggies are in the midst of a nine-game unbeaten run.
Then it would require Oxford to win both of their final two matches, which are at home to Sheffield Wednesday and away at Millwall respectively, as well as requiring them to overturn a six-goal swing.
Finally, Charlton would then need to have taken either at least one point or to have overturned a four-goal swing to finish above Albion, as both sides are now on 50 points, but the Baggies have a plus-four better goal difference than the Addicks.
What have West Brom said about potential appeal?
West Brom have every right to appeal this decision by the CFRP, as they continue to maintain that they’re aren’t of the belief they’ve done anything wrong.
As per the aforementioned club statement, they end that by saying that the Club is “considering its options,” and that a further comment will be provided once they’re in possession of an official written reason behind this deduction.
The final line of the statement is sure to fire up Baggies fans, saying: “for now, we will settle this on the pitch.”
So, if this points deduction has done anything, it’s only further highlighted why many want Morrison to be West Brom’s next permanent manager, as without the turnaround from his side, these two points could’ve carried far more weight.
