Barnsley fans made to look ridiculous amid ‘significant’ Callum Styles news at West Brom

Barnsley fans may have to eat their words after former player Callum Styles scooped up two awards for West Bromwich Albion.

Heading into the 0-0 draw with Championship promotion hopefuls Ipswich Town at The Hawthorns on Saturday, Styles’ efforts over the season did not go unnoticed.

Incidentally, the 26-year-old has proven to be an astute signing for West Brom after joining from Barnsley in 2024 on a four-year deal.

Despite playing more than 150 times for the Tykes, it seems that many Barnsley fans were happy to see the back of him a couple of years ago after loan spells at Millwall and Sunderland.

Styles helped West Brom extend their unbeaten run to 10 games following the goalless draw with Ipswich, as their Championship status was secured for another season – despite getting docked two points on Friday.

West Brom grateful to have Callum Styles

Styles has been an ever-present figure for West Brom over the past two seasons, with the Hungary international showing his extreme versatility along the way.

So far, he has played in left midfield, central midfield, attacking midfield, right midfield, defensive midfield, as a second striker, a winger, and at left-back.

Styles started at left-back against Ipswich and had a solid if unspectacular outing in front of a packed home crowd.

Before the contest got underway, Styles received the Player of the Year award from West Brom Supporters.

And while Ollie Bostock was named the Young Player of the Year, Styles scooped up the Players’ Player of the Year, too.

As pointed out by BBC Sport’s Steve Hermon, he won it by a “significant” margin, too.

Styles even brought his newborn baby onto the pitch as West Brom and Ipswich’s players emerged from the changing rooms before kick-off.

To get these awards, in addition to staying in the Championship, is not a bad day’s work for Styles.

Many Barnsley fans celebrated Styles’ exit, but they may not be laughing now, especially as they are still in League One.

West Brom continue remarkable run

Following West Brom’s 0-0 draw with Ipswich, the Baggies have now gone more than eight hours since conceding a goal in the Championship.

They are now on a 10-match unbeaten run under James Morrison, with the Midlands outfit pulling off a superb turnaround in recent months.

When Eric Ramsay was sacked in late February, West Brom looked destined to drop into the third division for the first time since 1991.

But a stunning upturn in form has guided West Brom to safety, as calls for caretaker boss Morrison to get the job full-time mount.
