Charlie Taylor contract situation: Expiry date, Southampton exit stance, and can West Brom sign him?

Charlie Taylor has come under fire ever since signing for West Bromwich Albion.

There were high expectations at one point for the 32-year-old when he completed a summer switch to The Hawthorns from Southampton.

With his years of experience in the Premier League and Championship, he should have come in and had a positive impact.

That certainly wasn’t the case, as many supporters grew frustrated with his performances in a massively difficult campaign all round.

Taylor’s time at West Brom is now coming to an end, as we now assess what we know about his current deal at St Mary’s.

What is Charlie Taylor’s contract situation at Southampton?

After finally breaking into the Leeds United first team, the Englishman has proven to be a regular at a decent level.

His best form came at Burnley before he ultimately joined the Saints on a free transfer, where things haven’t truly worked out.

That continued into the Black Country as the Baggies have failed to see the best of the versatile defender, regardless of his position.

He has hardly featured in recent weeks under James Morrison, and he now has just one Championship game until he returns to Southampton.

The former Leeds man signed a two-year deal at St Mary’s back in 2024, meaning his contract will come to an end in the summer if the option of another year isn’t triggered.

He is reportedly paid a weekly wage of £30,000 on the south coast, equating to a yearly salary in the region of £1.5million.

His return is unlikely to be celebrated after Taylor’s struggles with West Brom this season, as his future remains increasingly uncertain.

Will West Brom sign Taylor permanently?

With the Baggies facing a points deduction for financial mismanagement recently, big-money signings feel unlikely.

Taylor wouldn’t come with a large fee attached, but he would command a wage that may prove out of reach at The Hawthorns.

That may not bother Morrison and Co., as a return to B71 doesn’t appear likely after such a disappointing loan spell in the Midlands.

West Brom need a reset over the summer, so bringing in failed signings on permanent deals with sizable wages would be silly.

Although you can never put it past the Albion sometimes.
