West Brom: Joe Wildsmith contract latest as The Hawthorns return assessed
West Bromwich Albion let Joe Wildsmith depart on loan in January.
The 30-year-old had been a regular at times under both Tony Mowbray and Ryan Mason at The Hawthorns.
That certainly didn’t go down well with supporters in B71, as the keeper failed to impress after his summer 2024 switch from Derby County.
The signing of Max O’Leary in the summer ultimately spelt bad news for the Englishman, and he was allowed to leave in the winter.
Wildsmith joined Middlesbrough on loan, and now we assess what we know about his current deal in the Black Country.

What is Joe Wildsmith’s West Brom contract situation?
The 30-year-old hasn’t featured for Albion since New Year’s Day, when he featured in between the sticks in a 1-0 defeat away to Swansea City.
That was his seventh and final appearance of the campaign for the Baggies as he eventually went on to seal a move to The Riverside.
| Stat (Championship 25/26) | Joe Wildsmith |
| Appearances | 7 |
| Minutes played | 630 |
| Goals conceded | 11 |
| Clean sheets | 1 |
A six-month temporary deal with Boro went through, which would see him out the rest of the campaign with Kim Hellberg’s side, but he is yet to play a single minute.
As part of that, he may continue his reported £10,000 per week wage from The Hawthorns, equating to a yearly salary in the region of £520,000.
His current deal only lasts until the end of the season, after putting pen to paper on a two-year deal after his 2024 move from Derby.
Wildsmith may have left West Brom on loan, but that won’t impact his contract terms as he prepares to pack his bags in the West Midlands.
Could Wildsmith sign a new deal at West Brom?
It feels increasingly unlikely that the Baggies are going to keep hold of the former Sheffield Wednesday man after his struggles in B71.
There have been very few positive reviews of the keeper, so his return wouldn’t exactly go down well on the terraces.
That hasn’t been helped by the success of O’Leary on a free transfer, who would be a preferred option for many supporters.

He acts as a perfect option alongside Josh Griffiths, who may be hoping for more opportunities moving into next season.
None of that spells good news for Wildsmith, who is likely going to be on the lookout for a new side in the summer.
