West Bromwich Albion have loved a loan deal over the last few years, as it is one of the better financially appealing ways to get new blood into the manager’s squad.

Loan moves have often generated cult heroes at the Hawthorns over the past few decades, with Romelu Lukaku and Matheus Pereira springing to mind.

The two quickly became Black Country favourites for their exploits on loan, with the latter eventually signing on a permanent deal.

So, success can certainly be had in that regard, which brings into question what has gone wrong in recent seasons.

Ahead of West Brom’s summer window, they may need to look into how they conduct their loans from the Premier League, as results have been overall poor.

How many Premier League loans have West Brom made in last three seasons?

Over the last three seasons, West Brom have signed 11 players on loan from teams that were playing in the Premier League.

It is a strategy that, on paper, should work, with those dropping down from a higher-quality league to the second division.

However, the hit rate of successes has not been near enough to warrant it being a plan that should continue to be followed, with Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba the latest to fail to make an impact.

While financial issues have meant the loan market has been a more appealing route to go down, the Baggies may have to be creative in their strategy.

In just the last two seasons, they are averaging 4.5 loans from the Premier League, and over those campaigns, those limited successes have been clear.

Ahead of the upcoming window, it could be something for West Brom to look into.

Danny Imray had a slow start to life after making a switch from Crystal Palace to the Hawthorns, but under James Morrison, he began to show his qualities.

The Palace defender would be an excellent coup for the Baggies if they could secure a deal that means he returns to B71 next season, especially with his contract reportedly set to expire.

Mason Holgate could also be considered a success, although in that 2024-2025 season, the Baggies began to fall down the table after Carlos Corberan left.

Nonetheless, the Englishman played 26 times in the second division, and he popped up with some consistent performances over the season.

However, an 18 per cent hit rate with loanees from the Premier League is not the greatest of looks, and perhaps a change of strategy is needed.
