Alex Mowatt is ruled out for West Brom against Sheffield United on Sunday despite his injury being "nothing serious", according to DOOD.

The Albion news outlet posted on X (29 December) after Albion's team to face the Blades at Bramall Lane was named ahead of their Championship clash, with Mowatt absent from the squad altogether.

With Mason Holgate also missing, Ousmane Diakite was named to partner Jayson Molumby in Mowatt's absence, but the 29-year-old isn't expected to be out for long having not suffered a serious injury.

DOOD said: "Nothing serious, that's all I got told so far."

Alex Mowatt could be a huge miss for West Brom v Sheffield United

The odds are becoming more and more stacked against the Baggies ahead of their match at Bramall Lane, not least because they go into it still without a manager following Carlos Corberan's exit.

With Chris Brunt leading the interim team and now without his most experienced midfielder against the side joint-top of the Championship, the writing could be on the wall for the Baggies on Sunday.

Diakite is yet to impress since arriving at The Hawthorns on a free transfer from TSV Hartberg in the summer, and made just eight Championship appearances, with one start, during Corberan's tenure.

Mowatt has only been missing from the starting XI twice this term, and came off the bench on both occasions, underlining just how vital he is to making the Baggies tick from a deep-lying midfield role.

With Uros Racic surprisingly overlooked to operate alongside Molumby, the pressure on the Irishman will increase significantly, to provide the control and leadership Mowatt usually does without breaking sweat.
