Aune Heggebo is West Brom's biggest conundrum for next season - here's how James Morrison can get him flying
Aune Heggebo is going to be under pressure at West Brom from the first whistle of the new season.
The Norway international has been at The Hawthorns for nearly 12 months after his move from Brann last summer.
There were sizable expectations surrounding his move having scored 19 in his last two years in his homeland.
The anticipation surrounding his move only increased due to a £4.7million transfer fee that was the biggest outlay for one player in three years.
His first campaign in the Championship was certainly a mixed bag as the Baggies faced the threat of relegation.
Heggebo now has a major point to prove as James Morrison must work out how to get the best out of him.
Does Aune Heggebo deserve patience at West Brom?
The Black Country outfit haven't been free-spending over the years as financial worries have often been in the headlines.
That made spending so much on a relative unknown a surprise last summer.
The 24-year-old went on to be one of the most polarising players in the squad as he often blew hot and cold throughout the campaign.
He scored nine and assisted four, but his 12.5 per cent shot conversion rate is hardly anything to write home about.
That can be taken the other way that he was finding himself in positions to get shots off as he lined up 72 efforts on goal, while also creating 26 chances.
Winning 218 duels also highlights a positive element of his game, even if he did only win 37.6 of them throughout his debut season.
His work rate and effort is also infectious, even if that doesn't reflect with increased output.
He hasn't ever come across as a true goalscoring number nine and that could massively impact how Morrison lines up his side next campaign.
The key change that could get Heggebo firing for James Morrison
It does seem counterintuitive for a number nine to be seen as anything but a true goalscorer.
Heggebo fits into that bracket, but he could prove to be a massively important player for Morrison moving forward.
There will be a lot of pressure on him to deliver, but featuring him alongside others who can find the back of the net could prove to be the making of the Norwegian.
Barney Stewart and Jimmy-Jay Morgan have come in having scored 22 goals between them last season.
Mikey Johnston is also set for a return to begin the campaign after contributing to 11 goals in just 27 starts before injury.
Having players with increased output surrounding Heggebo is going to be necessary to help Morrison get the best out of the number nine.
That could take the pressure off his shoulders and potentially unlock a goalscoring run or see his link-up play improve further.
He does represent a dilemma for the Baggies next season, but there are ways that he can become a true star at The Hawthorns.
It will be down to the dugout in B71 now to make that happen and make sure that a £4.7m fee hasn't been wasted.
