Chris Mepham deserves more West Brom plaudits as footage of Wolves bust-up emerges

Chris Mepham will be hoping to get back into West Bromwich Albion's starting eleven after the defeat to Wolves on Sunday.

The Baggies were beaten 1-0 in the Black Country Derby after Fer Lopez' goal found the deadlock early into the second half.

Nat Phillips hit an undercooked back pass across Albion's box, which the Wolves forward latched onto to put past Max O'Leary.

There has been uproar from supporters about the performance of James Morrison's men at the Molineux, which had very little attacking threat.

The defeat leaves the Baggies fifth in the Championship heading into an extended international break.

Mepham will be hoping he can edge his way into the side over Phillips soon, but footage from full-time says everything West Brom fans need to know.

Mepham knows what it takes to get promoted, having been a regular starter for Sunderland during their promotion-winning 2024-25 season.

The centre-back has started just twice in the Championship so far this campaign, with George Campbell and Phillips the current favoured defensive partnership.

One main criticism for Baggies fans has been the lack of fight that their players showed against their rivals.

Tensions flared between the coaching staff of both sides at full-time, with Tony McMahon visibly annoyed at Wolves' assistant coach.

As seen in Sky Sports' post on X, Mepham was the only West Brom player who went over with passion, looking to defend McMahon.

Jayson Molumby came over shortly after McMahon had walked away to try and calm the latter down.

There were few players who were up for the fight against Wolves, and perhaps the one man who wanted to win the most was rooted to the bench all game.

Does Mepham deserve to start over Nat Phillips?

Phillips has been great for West Brom all season, but in the biggest game of the campaign, he let everyone down.

It was an unforgivable mistake from the former Liverpool man, who clearly didn't have the nous to clear the ball upfield instead.

Mepham has always been a reliable option for Albion, and perhaps he will be looking to impress Morrison over the break.

Who knows? Maybe if West Brom organise a behind-closed-doors game to keep fit, Morrison could give Mepham another deserved chance to impress.
