Don Goodman shares favourite thing he's seen from Josh Maja at West Brom beyond goals

West Brom News Speaking to Don Goodman

West Brom News is delighted to have Don Goodman joining its team of Albion experts at the start of 2024. Goodman played for the Baggies between 1987 and 1991, scoring 60 goals in 140 league appearances to make him one of the most prolific strikers in Hawthorns history. Goodman also played for Bradford, Sunderland, Wolves, Motherwell and Walsall in his career and since hanging up his boots, he's been working in the media with Sky Sports. Now, Don has agreed to join West Brom News and we're absolutely thrilled to share his expertise on the Baggies every week.

Don Goodman was more impressed by the assist laid on by Josh Maja for Jayson Molumby recently than any goals the West Brom striker has scored.

Maja has six goals in six Championship appearances this season, seeing him lead the scoring charts at this early stage.

The Nigeria international also has one assist, coming in the win over Swansea City on 31 August when setting up Molumby for the only goal of the game.

Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, Goodman said: "Despite those four goals, my favourite thing from him this season so far was his assist for the Jayson Molumby goal against Swansea.

"To me, when you're a striker banging in the goals, it can be easy to make poor choices in other situations, but he didn't and that impressed me.

"He squared the ball to Molumby, rather than shooting from an angle, which signifies a player who's thinking clearly and is at the top of his mental capacity. To be that unselfish, I was super impressed with that."

Josh Maja enjoying form of his life for West Brom

Many wondered how West Brom would cope heading into season with Maja tasked with leading the line following Brandon Thomas-Asante's exit.

The opening-day hat-trick at Queens Park Rangers pretty much answered that question, and the striker has not looked back since, most recently netting in the win over Plymouth Argyle.

Six goals and an assist from six outings is a superb return and one that, while perhaps not entirely sustainable, has Maja on course for his best ever season.

The Hawthorns has been the home of West Brom since 1900.

Others are also chipping in, which is vitally important, but the gauntlet has now very much been laid down by Maja.

Whether it is scoring, assisting or just generally linking up play, long may this purple patch continue for the 25-year-old.
