West Bromwich Albion beat Rotherham United 4-1 in the Carabao Cup on Saturday.

AESSEAL New York Stadium welcomed the Baggies on 8 August, with Jimmy-Jay Morgan giving the visitors an early lead.

The summer signing's strike in the 24th minute then forced a save from Ted Cann and Harry Whitwell eventually got on the end of the loose ball to score.

James Morrison had West Brom playing some free-flowing football against Rotherham, with Felix Horn Myhre also scoring on his debut.

The Albion overpowered the League Two side with their attacking quality, while Nat Phillips and George Campbell were solid at the back apart from the moment when Fabio Tavares scored.

Several players from the Black Country outfit put in impressive performances, but two stood out.

Harry Whitwell different class in West Brom win vs Rotherham United

Morrison may have found his talisman for the 2026-27 campaign in Whitwell.

The 20-year-old started on the right-wing, but had a free role in the middle of the park when the Baggies had possession.

Whitwell had several eye-catching moments in the game apart from his goal, looking comfortable in possession and playing some impressive passes around the opposition defence.

The England youth international has all the makings of being a key player for the Albion this season in the Championship.

Whitwell also put in a shift defensively, something Morrison will surely value highly.

Jimmy-Jay Morgan has blistering debut at New York Stadium

Morgan started strong, constantly putting the opposition defence under pressure.

The Baggies signed the striker from Chelsea for an initial fee of £1.3million and that could end up being a bargain given his display against Rotherham.

Apart from scoring the two goals and playing an important role in the build-up to the second, the 20-year-old Englishman pressed on the front foot and gave the League Two side's defenders no room to breathe.

While Rotherham aren't the best of opposition, there will certainly be some optimism among fans in B71 after that display.
