Irish media react to West Brom star Jayson Molumby in controversial Israel showdown

Jayson Molumby's good form for West Bromwich Albion is also paying dividends for the Republic of Ireland.

The midfielder came into the summer with a fairly uncertain future at The Hawthorns.

He and Alex Mowatt had speculation surrounding their future at Albion, as the latter eventually left to join Derby County.

However, at the start of the season, it became clear that Molumby would be staying, and has already played a huge role for James Morrison.

The Baggies boss will be keeping his fingers crossed that his midfielder doesn't come back from international duty with any injury issues.

Molumby featured in Ireland's 3-0 Nations League win over Israel on Sunday, as controversy surrounded the fixture all week.

Molumby featured in Ireland's 1-0 defeat to Kosovo in their opening Nations League match, and played 90 minutes.

He managed to rack up 88 minutes of playing time against Israel, and Morrison will be hoping that's his final start before club football resumes, however unlikely that is.

The 27-year-old completed 93 per cent of his passes accurately, while having a total of 42 touches in the game.

The midfielder won three ground duels in the match, as he also came away from the game with 100 per cent long-ball accuracy.

The Irish Independent gave him an 8/10 rating and wrote: "Produced a typically energetic and committed shift in central midfield and worked his socks off.

"Wasn’t afraid to put his body on the line before being replaced by debutant Joel Bagan."

Extra.ie, also handed him an 8/10 rating, writing: "Another dogged display, never seems to get tired."

It will be good for Baggies fans to hear their midfielder pick up such good reviews, though the remarks about his work ethic won't surprise.

The interesting 100% West Brom stat without Molumby

Molumby is no doubt a key player for the Black Country Club, and looks to have retired from his duties of playing at right midfield for now.

He, like many West Brom players, was poor in the 1-0 loss to Wolves before the break, and will be hoping to bounce back against Birmingham City.

The Brighton man has started in all but two of Albion's eight Championship games this season.

Interestingly, Morrison's side have won both games that Molumby has been benched in, with the first coming against Norwich City, and the other against Watford.

Perhaps that statistic is more telling of how good West Brom's depth in quality is this year.

To do that in a game surrounded with such conflict, is a compliment to just how much praise Molumby deserves.
