James Morrison's plans for Harry Whitwell revealed after latest West Brom scenes

Harry Whitwell's future has been clarified after speculation that he could leave West Brom on loan.

The 20-year-old spent part of last season with Forest Green Rovers, before being recalled to The Hawthorns in January.

The Baggies youngster played 23 times for the National League side with three goals in that time.

He made four appearances since coming back to the Black Country club, so there was a question of whether he would be loaned out again.

It appears that James Morrison has made up his mind and it bodes very well for the youngster.

Supporters should be seeing a lot more of him in the 2026-27 season.

Whitwell scored his first Albion goal of his career in the 4-1 Carabao Cup first round win over Rotherham United.

He could be set to add more to that tally in the near future after the manager's plans for him were highlighted.

BBC Radio WM's Steve Hermon claimed on Sunday that he thought Whitwell may go out on loan after speaking to him after the Shrewsbury friendly.

However, he revealed that Morrison has told him that he will be part of his plans for the campaign.

Taking to X on 9 August, he said: "I spoke to Harry Whitwell after the Shrewsbury friendly & thought there was a chance he could be loaned out again, but James Morrison confirmed to me he’s ‘in his plans’ for the first team."

Why West Brom fans should be excited and nervous about Whitwell update

Whitwell is one of the biggest talents to emerge from the academy in recent years.

He is capable of operating in attacking midfield or in a deeper role, if he is required to.

He notched 14 goals in 71 matches for the Under-21 side, so it is a well deserved promotion.

Hopefully, now that his status as a senior player has been rubber stamped by Morrison, he can kick on and be a genuine contender for a place in the side.

If he does not play enough, though, it could be harmful for his development.

Baggies supporters will hope that he does not follow recent trends set by the likes of Alex Palmer and Tom Fellows, with academy players leaving the club to bolster the books.

Shilen Patel and Co have managed the financial issues well, and that shouldn't have to happen again with Whitwell.
