Johnny Giles has slammed the referee in the Portugal vs Republic of Ireland game that featured West Brom defender Dara O'Shea.

The Baggies player made the headlines for an altercation with Cristiano Ronaldo which saw the Portugal captain move his arms in the direction of O'Shea.

On contact, O'Shea threw himself to the ground, which led to questions about where or not Ronaldo should've been shown a red card for that.

Discussing the incident on Off The Ball, Keegan said, "Ronaldo shouldn't have done that. No [he didn't deserve to get sent off], I don't think so.

"It happens all the time. Ronaldo did hit him but did he catch him with the full punch?

"I thought the referee wasn't good. If he was favouring any team, then it was definitely them."

Correct decision?

We believe so. While Ronaldo is known to have a competitive streak and arguably shouldn't have laid hands on the player, he was rightly not given his marching orders.

However, he should've got at least a yellow for that, which would then mean his celebration after the second goal would have been a more subdued one.

That said, it was still quite silly of O'Shea to do that. We get that you've been shoved by him, but rather than throwing a tantrum, shoving him in return or completely ignoring him would've been a better alternative.

This instance hasn't made anyone come out with flying colours and quite frankly, is embarrassing to rewatch.

Hopefully, both players learn their lessons and let their performances on the field do the talking.

Just one of the things we get with the modern game and it is absolutely ridiculous.
