West Brom player ratings vs Newcastle: Ousmane Diakite fantastic but 3/10 defender shocking

West Brom were knocked out of the Carabao Cup courtesy of a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

Despite Isaac Price scoring a brace for the Albion at St James' Park, it was former Baggies loan star Harvey Barnes who was Newcastle's hero, coming off the bench at half-time to net twice.

Price opened the scoring for West Brom with a clever free-kick in the 19th minute.

Bazoumana Toure equalised in the 38th minute, but there's a chance it could have been an own goal by Chris Mepham.

Barnes was substituted into the action at the break, replacing Toure, and took just three minutes to put Newcastle ahead.

Lewis Hall then conceded a penalty for the second game in a row, which Price converted to score from the spot, also for the second consecutive match.

However, Barnes had the final say against his former club, netting a winner in the 81st minute.

Ousmane Diakite shines yet again

It's rare to see West Brom play now without Ousmane Diakite having a good game.

Although the first and second halves of the Carabao Cup tie were very different, with Newcastle controlling a lot of the second period, Diakite was instrumental in the first half.

He controlled possession well, with almost everything the Baggies did coming through him in the middle.

The Mali international was also key out of possession, with stats by Sofascore showing that he made six interceptions, made four recoveries and won the only tackle he challenged for.

Diakite also completed 87 per cent of his passes.

Chris Mepham fails audition in West Brom starting XI

Morrison will have had plenty of positives to take back to the Black Country after that performance at St James' Park

However, Mepham's performance was not one of them.

Regardless of whether or not it was an own goal in the first half, the 28-year-old's positioning was all over the place when it seemed like he had a rather easy clearance to make.

For Barnes' first goal after the break, the defending was sloppy all around, but Mepham arguably caused the chaos in the box for failing to clear the ball at him.

And then for Barnes' second, he turned to the side instead of facing up to block the ex-West Brom loanee's shot at goal, which is never a good look.

Mepham came off the bench late on in the wins against Norwich and Burnley and was an unused substitute in the first round of the Carabao Cup against Rotherham.

Maybe the former Bournemouth defender should stick to that role, instead of being relied upon from the off.
