West Brom's Premier League promotion chances predicted by supercomputer after Millwall defeat

West Brom fans will be hoping that Albion's recent form is not a sign of what's to come this season.

Albion suffered a 3-0 defeat to Millwall at The Den on 4 October to make it three losses in the Championship this season.

Ryan Mason started the season in impressive style, only to see that end after West Brom's defeat to Derby County.

Four games later, and the Baggies have won just one in their last five league games, with Mason having a lot of ground to make up.

Supercomputer predicts fifth-place Championship finish for West Brom

West Brom were predicted to finish third in the Championship at the beginning of September.

The Championship supercomputer, created by sports analytics company Opta, believes there is still a chance for the Baggies to secure a play-off spot.

However, there is a far smaller chance of being crowned 2025-26 Championship winners after simulating millions of outcomes based on all the data collected on the second division sides.

It suggested that:

Albion will finish fifth in the Championship
The Baggies will pick up an estimated 67 points
West Brom have a 3.68 per cent of winning the league

For reference, the Baggies were predicted to finish on 73 points with a 10 per cent chance of winning the title one month ago.

This decline can be attributed to Mason, whose unpredictable lineups, poor tactics and disappointing results have been a huge talking point these past couple of weeks.

Ryan Mason needs to decide his starting lineup

One of the biggest reasons behind Albion's inconsistent form has been Mason's constant squad rotation.

Indeed, Josh Maja netted West Brom's only goal against Norwich City, only to return to the bench against Millwall.

Furthermore, Samuel Iling-Junior was condemned to the same fate after scoring and creating Albion's last two Championship goals.

Meanwhile, Aune Heggebo started at The Den despite netting one league goal in eight starts for West Brom.

Therefore, the Baggies will be unable to achieve consistent results if the lineup is constantly changing and underperforming players are continuously handed gametime, and it's an area that Mason will need to address if he wants any chance of booking a place in the play-offs this season.
