West Brom could get Matt Gill answer in hours as appointment set at EFL club
West Bromwich Albion are looking to form James Morrison's backroom staff for the coming season, with Matt Gill's future uncertain.
Gill joined up with Morrison earlier this year, having built up an impressive body of work with the likes of Norwich and Southampton.
Interim Baggies boss Morrison had taken charge of the club twice before, though this was a different task, with the club needing to be saved from relegation.
The former midfielder did exactly that, with a 10-match unbeaten run to the end of the season, sealing survival with relative ease in the end.
Now, he is aiming for a more prosperous year, building a squad ready to compete at a higher level in the Championship.
But Morrison may have to do without Gill, who could be set to join up with a former colleague at Leicester.
Russell Martin appointment at Leicester could cause problem
While his reputation has taken a hit as a result of a stint at Rangers and a dismal Premier League record with Southampton, Russell Martin has proven himself in the EFL.
Leicester were among those fighting for survival alongside Albion at the back end of the season, but now appear set to appoint Martin as early as Sunday as they look to climb out of League One - a reminder of just how things could have been at The Hawthorns.
Gill has worked with Martin at multiple clubs, including Swansea and Southampton, with the pair guiding the latter to the top flight.
"Obviously, my loyalties are with Russ," he told Norwich-based outlet Pink Un last week.
With Martin seemingly ready to make the move to the King Power Stadium, Gill could be set to leave the Black Country already, just months after joining up with Morrison.
James Morrison right man for West Brom thanks to unheralded trait
Upon his appointment in February, questions were obviously banded about Morrison's lack of managerial experience.
However, the only way to gain that is to learn on the job himself - something he most certainly did as he rescued the Baggies out of a shocking situation.
By getting the right people around him, he was able to apply an element of common sense not just in his tactical approach, but in how he handled the press, his players and the fanbase.
With a calming aura - an unheralded trait - Morrison settled down a volatile predicament at The Hawthorns as if it were never there in the first place, and for that, he absolutely deserves a chance to take the task on full time - hopefully guiding Albion to a more prosperous future.
