How much West Brom stand to profit as Bristol City push for Reyes Cleary deal
West Bromwich Albion could finally see some money for Reyes Cleary as talk of a Barnsley exit grows.
Cleary joined Barnsley last July after rejecting the offer of a new contract from West Brom
The 22-year-old wanted to play regularly, which was not happening at The Hawthorns.
He was limited to seven appearances for the Baggies in all competitions, just two of which - both in 2022-23 - came in the Championship.
Albion were entitled to a compensation fee from Barnsley for Cleary due to the fact they had developed him from the age of eight.
But it may well be that the negotiating done last summer could profit Albion far more a year on.
How much has been offered for Reyes Cleary?
It was reported last year that Albion had instead negotiated a sell-on fee with Barnsley as part of the agreement for Cleary.
This was, at the time, considered a gamble as it meant West Brom foregoing any upfront payment.
But it now looks likely to pay off handsomely amid fresh reports regarding the forward.
Bristol City are said to be pushing hard to sign Cleary and have even had one offer knocked back.
In fact, as per Pete O'Rourke via X, multiple bids have been tabled to Barnsley for Cleary this summer.
The highest of those is in the region of £3million.
It had previously been suggested West Brom may have a 15 per cent sell-on clause, which would mean they land £450,000 of that.
Given Barnsley rejected the £3m bid, anything higher that is accepted will only increase West Brom's slice of the pie.
How has Cleary performed since West Brom exit?
Cleary felt he should have been playing more regularly at West Brom and, to his credit, he has proved himself since moving on.
The former England Under-20s international scored seven goals and assisted 13 in 42 Ligue 1 appearances last season.
While the third tier is a drop down, there is still a strong argument to be made he would have made an impact for West Brom as they battled relegation.
Barnsley knew interest would come in for Cleary this summer and so that has proved.
Albion will now watch on with close interest, knowing they stand to land what is a fairly sizeable sum all things considered.
