West Brom star Jayson Molumby looks set to stay at West Brom after fresh developments at Wrexham.

The Irishman is a key player for James Morrison, and the idea of his losing him would have been a scary thought.

He is a divisive figure, with a temper that can often get him in trouble, but that combative nature can come in handy on the pitch.

Wrexham were supposedly interested in a deal for the midfielder, after poaching Danny Imray from Albion's wishlist.

It was understood that it was Molumby or another target for the Stok Cae Ras outfit, and it seems that they have gone in another direction.

That will be a relief for the Baggies, as exit fears over the 26-year-old may have eased.

BBC Sport Lancashire revealed on Monday that the Dragons have had a bid accepted for Preston captain Ben Whiteman.

Pete O'Rourke then reported on Tuesday that the midfielder is set for a medical with the Welsh side.

That should rule them out of the race for the Throstles man, as it was reportedly one or the other.

Why it is imperative for West Brom to keep Molumby

The defensive midfielder played 38 times in the Championship last season, with 31 starts under his belt.

He notched two goals and two assists, but that is not his primary role in the side.

The 36-cap international averaged 1.09 tackles, 5.93 recoveries and 1.30 clearances per 90 minutes, according to data from Fotmob.

In terms of duels, he won 45.5 per cent on the ground and 47.7 per cent in the air, which are solid numbers.

Losing his influence would have been a blow before the new second tier campaign starts, so Morrison will be glad that their rivals have moved their attention elsewhere.

Now, he and the player can focus on their preparations for the new season and trying to battle the Welsh side towards the upper echelons of the division.

Hopefully, they can finish above them and Imray will regret picking the Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney-owned side.
