West Brom's midfield transfer plan revealed after Alex Mowatt exit

West Bromwich Albion have decided to cash in on Alex Mowatt after agreeing a deal with Derby County.

The Rams have announced the 31-year-old's arrival from the Baggies for an undisclosed fee.

With one year left on the Englishman's contract at the Albion, it certainly made sense to sell him.

Mowatt was a key player at The Hawthorns over the last three seasons, but has ended his stint in the West Midlands.

James Morrison started the midfielder in the 4-1 win over Rotherham United in the Carabao Cup on 8 August, but will now have to rely on his other options in the engine room.

It looks like the Black Country outfit have set their recruitment plans after parting ways with one of the longest-serving members of the first-team squad.

At the end of last season, the likes of Josh Maja and Karlan Grant left as free agents and the Baggies didn't want to see the same happen with the midfielder.

According to BBC Radio WM Sport journalist Steve Hermon on 14 August, the Albion have taken the business decision to sell Mowatt and are happy with their remaining midfield options.

The West Midlands club seem to have no plans of finding a replacement for the Englishman, with Ousmane Diakite, Jayson Molumby and new signings Felix Horn Myhre and Rabby Nzingoula at Morrison's disposal.

Hermon admits he wouldn't rule out adding a new midfielder before the end of the transfer window, but it's not a priority, with the manager desperate for a new winger.

While West Brom will face much tougher opposition than Rotherham this season, the opening game gave fans plenty to be excited about.
