What Jayson Molumby needs alongside him as West Brom eye new midfield partner
Jayson Molumby could be central to a new-look midfield at West Bromwich Albion next season.
James Morrison has a decision to make on what formation he runs with next campaign, as his 4-4-2 setup could face some issues in the long term.
Ousmane Diakite is now staying at The Hawthorns after some exit rumours, but the future of Alex Mowatt hangs in the balance.
Regardless of whether Mowatt leaves, Albion will be in the market for a new midfield, possibly even two if he does depart.
The middle of the park was a big talking point among Baggies fans last season, as Molumby himself faced some criticism for poor performances.
But after a resurrection under Morrison, the Republic of Ireland international could have his best season yet for West Brom if the club can land him the perfect midfield partner.
This is what Jayson Molumby needs to complement his game in midfield
While Diakite had a great season for the Black Country Club, he will need competition to fight for a spot next to Molumby.
Mowatt has a host of Championship clubs after his signature, and his exit could follow a few other names to leave the club this summer.
Molumby is a classic example of a box-to-box midfielder, and depending on Morrison's setup, he may need two different types of midfielders available to be his midfield partner.
Diakite can help dictate the game, while Molumby's energy keeps the Baggies ticking over in the middle of the park, as the latter often breaks up the opposition's attacks.
However, chance creation from deep midfield has been missing, and that will be made even worse if Mowatt is sold.
Though the 31-year-old didn't have the best season, his best midfield qualities were on the ball and in the final third, and when he was on his best game, so was Molumby.
It's clear that the Irishman needs someone with bite, but also a partner who can make up for what he lacks in terms of creativity.
West Brom may already know the perfect man to sign.
West Brom get Alfie Devine transfer update
According to Express and Star, West Brom are "in the running" to sign Alfie Devine from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
Preston North End held the option to make his loan stay at Deepdale permanent this summer.
However, the Lilywhites have yet to announce the arrival of Devine, as the buy clause in his contract has now expired.
It was said that Preston did trigger this option, but it was reportedly then up to the player on whether he was open to the move or not.
There will have been other hurdles involved, but the seeming fall through of this deal gives an advantage to West Brom, who should be all over a transfer to sign Devine.
