Why James Morrison's transfer comments are a breathe of fresh air as West Brom priority identified

West Bromwich Albion have done some decent, if understated, work in the summer transfer window so far.

The Baggies have drafted in six new signings so far to boose their squad for the upcoming campaign.

Matt Ingram, Nolan Galves, Conor Townsend, Felix Horn Myhre, Barney Stewart, and Jimmy-Jay Morgan have arrived so far.

And yet, there is still an acknowledgment that Albion's squad needs some more work before the 1 September deadline.

Ideally, more bodies would be through the door before the opening Championship game against Norwich City last week.

Indeed, boss James Morrison has been speaking about where his own personal transfer priority is in the coming weeks.

What does James Morrison want next at West Brom?

Modern-day Baggies legend Morrison did a fine job of steering West Brom away from relegation trouble last season.

Indeed, he did such a good job that Albion were even able to survive despite a points deduction for falling foul of financial regulations.

So, Morrison certainly deserves to be backed as much as possible to give him the opportunity to get West Brom challenging at the top end of the table.

He credited the work Albion have done in the transfer market so far, but he did outline the clear need for the Baggies to sign more wingers before the close of the window.

In quotes reported by the Express & Star, Morrison said: "We need to improve and I hope to improve the squad. “

"There is a lot of hard work going into it and we will get them in.

“We are always looking to strengthen positions but I think it is no secret we need some wingers in.

“I have been really happy with the way we have been working. I understand too there is a lot of hard work which needs to be done but we are in a good place.”

But even Morrison's admission here is a breathe of fresh air, and shows why is deserving of his opportunity.

So often in the murky world of football, all you will hear from coaches in the window is how they want more.

Morrison is clearly in need of depth, especially in the final third, but there is no bellyaching about it.

He is willing to show patience to get the right calibre of player through the door, it is not about signing players for the sake of it.

In the past, West Brom may have been guilty of making decisions in the market that were rushed in desperation to fill a need.

Morrison is clearly of the opinion that it is his job to get the most out of what he's got, even though he would like to have more at his disposal.

It's just a really refreshing view, and hopefully West Brom can reward his patience with some quality additions in the next few weeks.
